Jimmy Stewart - (Actor ) When Jimmy Stewart enlisted in the Army Air Corps in March 1941, he already had a pilot's license, both private and commercial. In January 1942, he was sent to Kirtland Field in New Mexico to instruct bombardiers. Stuart was sent next to Hobbs Field for a course on B-17's. After serving as Operations Officer at Gowen Field, Idaho, he was transferred to Sioux City, Iowa where he served as Operations Officer for the 703rd Squadron. With Stuart's flying ability and leadership skills, he was given command of the squadron. In late 1943, he was sent to England. His war record included 20 combat missions as command pilot. After being promoted to squadron commander, he became Operations Officer, and from 1944 to 1945 served as Chief of Staff, 2nd Combat Wing, 2nd Division, 8th Air Force. By the end of the war, Stewart was a colonel. In 1959 he was promoted in the Air Force Reserves to the rank of Brigadier General. As an actor, Stewart became a movie icon. One of his most beloved roles was as George Bailey in "It's A Wonderful Life."
