Higher Fitness Standards for Airmen

The goal of the Air Force Fitness Program is to keep Airmen healthy all year round, emphasizing total fitness combining aerobics, strength, flexibility, and balanced eating to optimize health and readiness.

Effective July 1, 2010, Air Force fitness requirements for Air Force instruction will reflect comprehensive changes with more stringent requirements in order to pass the Air Force fitness program. These Air Force testing standards are amendments to the 10-series Air Force Instruction 36-2905 Fitness Program.

HYBRID TESTING FOR AIRMEN

Airmen testing for fitness through June 2010 will be measured by a two-score card "hybrid" system. Score card number one will show measure using scoring charts on file with the Air Force Fitness Management System through June 2010. Score card number two will measure fitness using charts effective in July 2010.

During the interim hybrid period, Air Force Reserve Airmen are required to take a fitness test 12 months after the initial test, and then again after 6 months, to begin the biannual cycle. Active-duty and drill status airmen are required to take the fitness test 12 months after their initial test.

This "hybrid" approach to fitness is designed to improve Airmen's overall fitness during the transition period.

FIT TO BE AIRMEN

Each Airman receives a composite fitness score, which is made up by components that each have minimum passing scores. The components of overall fitness are body composition, evaluated by abdominal circumference; aerobics, evaluated by a timed 1.5 mile run; and muscular ability, evaluated by number of push ups/sit ups completed within one minute. Test requirements are to complete all fitness test components on the same day, within a three-hour time period.

For service members with medical inability to run, the alternative aerobic component is a 1.0-mile walk proctored by the fitness program manager.

ADDING UP THE FITNESS SCORES

The Air Force fitness composite score is age and gender-specific, calculated by adding your component scores which cap at 60 points aerobic, 20 points body composition, and 10 points for pushups/sit-ups respectively. Air Force fitness tests are given to Air Force personnel bi-annually and a passing score of 75 or above must be met for each category. Air Force fitness tests are conducted at various fitness assessment cells proctored by civilian fitness testing technicians.
