Congress Proposes Improved Housing Support for Veterans

H.R. 403: HOMES FOR HEROES ACT of 2009
Passed the House of Representatives June 2009

The Homes For Heroes Act of 2009 successfully allows the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide expanded housing assistance to eligible low-income veterans. HUD ensures military veterans access to housing and homelessness assistance. Homes for Heroes directs HUD to provide financial contributions, planning assistance, and guidelines for nonprofit organizations in creating housing for low-income veterans.

Homes for Heroes also amends U.S. Housing Act of 1937 to extend all rental vouchers for VA housing units to all homeless veterans regardless of medical conditions. In addition, the Public Housing Agency (PHA) is required to include housing needs of low-income veterans on agency waiting lists.

S. 3150: SERVICE MEMBERS PERMANENT CHANGE OF STATION RELIEF ACT
Introduced March 22, 2010

The Service Members Permanent Change of Station Relief Act proposed to increase reimbursement rates per mile for moving costs associated with permanent change of station on military service. This bill will establish a business standard mileage rate for reimbursing military service members moving due to permanent change of station or travel to the first station of active duty service. Dependents of military service members moving costs are also included as recipients in the reimbursement plan of the Service Members Permanent Change of Station Relief Act.

S. 842: HOUSING LOAN RELIEF FOR VETERANS FACING FORCLOSURE
Introduced April 21, 2009

Amendment to U.S. Code title 38, Housing Loan Relief for Veterans Facing Foreclosure bill intends to repeal the Dec 31, 2010 termination date of the foreclosure protection afforded to veterans by the Housing and Economic Recovery Act. This amendment proposes to continue the VA protections of military service members from mortgage foreclosures. Amendment to U.S. Code title 38, Housing Loan Relief for Veterans Facing Foreclosure bill authorizes the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to pay mortgage holders' unpaid balances on VA-guaranteed housing loans.

H.R. 4569: EXPANDED HOUSING FOR AMERICA'S VETERANS ACT
Introduced February 2, 2010

Amendment to U.S. Housing Act of 1937, the Expanded Housing for America's Veterans Act proposes an increase to Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) rental assistance vouchers on behalf of homeless veterans with chronic disorders, in an effort to support the housing needs of our homeless veterans who suffer from chronic disabilities and keep them in decent housing conditions.
