The Veterans Retraining Act of 2009 passed the House of Representatives on November 2, 2009 and is ready to be put into action. Below is a break down of the Veterans Retraining Act program benefits and how veterans like you can take advantage of this powerful military program to gain new employment.

MONTHLY VETERANS TRAINING ASSISTANCE ALLOWANCE

Depending on the amount allotted for this section, the Secretary of Labor may pay each eligible veteran a monthly training assistance allowance for every month of enrollment in a training program that teaches an in-demand skill.

The amount of the training assistance allowance is equal to your monthly basic allowance for housing payable for a military service member with dependents in military pay grade E-5.

LENGTH OF VETERANS TRAINING ASSISTANCE

An eligible veteran may receive training assistance under this section for up to six months during each 10-year period, beginning with your first training session.

MOVING STIPEND FOR PROGRAM VETERANS

In addition to the training assistance allowance, if the funds are allowable, the Secretary may reimburse every eligible veteran up to $5,000 for moving costs related to the training program you have enrolled in.

WHO IS AN ELIGIBLE VETERAN FOR EMPLOYMENT TRAINING?

A 'covered veteran,' or eligible veteran, is a U.S. military veteran who is unemployed for a period of four consecutive months or higher at the time of applying for training assistance. An eligible veteran is also able to successfully complete the employment and training program as determined by the Secretary.

HOW MUCH WILL THE MILITARY SPEND ON VETERANS TRAINING?

For each fiscal year, $100,000,000 will be authorized to carry out the Veterans Retraining Act of 2009.

AS A VETERAN, WHEN CAN I START EMPLOYMENT TRAINING?

The effective start date of the Employment training assistance for unemployed veterans is the first day of the 2011 fiscal year.
