TRICARE Young Adult Program

Posted:

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 required civilian health plans to offer coverage to adult military children until age 26. TRICARE previously met or exceeded key tenets of national health reform, including restrictions on annual limits, lifetime maximums, or denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions.

TRICARE is expanding coverage to meet changing health care requirements with the NDAA granting the DOD authority to offer expanded benefits to young adults under TRICARE.

PRESENTING TRICARE YOUNG ADULT

In 2011, the Department of Defense introduced the premium-based TRICARE Young Adult Program, which extends medical coverage to eligible military family members up to age 26. This is great news for military family members set to age out of TRICARE at age 21 (or 23 for full-time college students), who are not married, or not eligible for their own employer-sponsored coverage.

TRICARE Young Adult will allow qualified dependents to pay premiums back to January 1, 2011 and file retroactive claims while they were covered by TRICARE Standard or TRICARE Extra.

TRICARE STANDARD/EXTRA COVERAGE IN THE MEANTIME

TRICARE fast-tracked the implementation of the Young Adult program to ensure that all eligible military participants are enrolled.

In addition, qualified, unmarried dependents up to age 26 may purchase TRICARE Standard/Extra health coverage on a month-to-month basis. Those eligible for TRICARE Young Adult Program are encouraged to save all medical receipts starting January 1, 2011, as the new TRICARE benefit will be retroactive to January 1, 2011 provided premiums are also paid back to January 1. After purchasing TRICARE Young Adult, participants will receive a new ID card as verification.

The TRICARE Young Adult program has been hailed as an excellent way to serve hundreds of thousands of military beneficiaries who might have otherwise remained without health care coverage.
