Military Aircraft Communications In Synch

Posted:

Synchronized communication between datalinks from jets, satellites and ground vehicles has been a timeless problem for the military.

Better communication between military jets, satellites, and ground vehicles would create greater efficiency in air and land missions, cyber security, military intelligence, and naval and space operations.

JOINT AERIAL LAYER NETWORK AND CYBERWARFARE

In 2011, Lt. Gen. William Lord, Chief Information Officer at the Air Force, reported that the Pentagon is working to solve incongruities in the cyber network.

During an Air Force Association-sponsored conference on cyberwarfare in Spring 2011, Lt. Gen. William Lord assured that a Joint Aerial Layer Network is in development for the Navy, Marine Corps, and the Army.

A Joint Aerial Layer Network will link ground, space and airborne communications nodes, allowing all military vehicles to communicate with one another.

SYNCHING ALL MILITARY EQUIPMENT

Disconnected datalinks keep military equipment from operating efficiently in warfare situations. For example, it was speculated that F-22 Raptors were excluded from use in Libya in 2011 due to an inability to communicate with other aircrafts through datalinks.

Synchronizing all military equipment presents a military technology challenge: older military equipment tends to have differing technological capabilities. For example, on the air-side, Link-16 and Link-11 on older jets have trouble connecting to the more advanced F-22's Intra Flight Data Link (IFDL) and the F-35's Multi Function Advanced Datalink (MADL).

The U.S. Joint Forces Command wants a fully interconnected network and network research by the Joint Forces Command is expected to be complete by 2011.
