Iridium Satellite Phones Power Military Connections

The U.S. Department of Defense is now employing DTCS Iridium technology for its satellite phones to increase military efficacy and secure battlefield-ready internet service especially on battlefields overseas.

THE RISE, FALL, AND REVIVAL OF IRIDIUM

The brief Motorola-funded Iridium system project opened and closed in 1998, overestimating the market demand for satellite phones.

The DOD, however, saw potential military benefit and found investors, securing cheap military rates for up to 20,000 Iridium based phones. By 2005, the DOD-revived Iridium satellite system, now with new owners and lower prices, had registered 140,000 civilian and military customers.

FASTER MILITARY PHONE CONNECTIONS

There are a number of features that make the Iridium satellite phones ideal for today's military needs.

DTCS netted Iridium is built for speed, and can instantly connect military service members in the hills of Afghanistan, where most FM radios fall short.

In addition, DTCS networks are always running, without dialing numbers and waiting for connections like other satellite phones.

DTCS phones are also built for short radio messages, for which troops have an exclusive vocabulary.

Distributed Tactical Communications System netted Iridium radio uses rechargeable batteries, weighs about 1 pound, and is push-to-talk, just like a walky-talky. Frequencies assigned to a military unit cover a circular 160 or 240-kilometer area. DTCS phones issued to commanders can also be hooked up to a laptop, to send and receive digital data.
