7 Top Tuition Resources for Veterans

Posted:

Through a variety of grants, vocational schools, and discounted tuition programs, the public and private sector are committed to supporting veterans like you as you pursue your continuing education and post-military career.

Here are 7 key tuition assistance programs and organizations that offer financial scholarships for the estimated 375,000 troops that return home annually for veterans.

1. GENERAL MIITARY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ALL VETERANS

The military branches themselves serve as a great source of college funding.

Contact your military branch to find out how they can finance your post-military education. Also be sure to contact your local VA office for information on financial opportunities for injured veterans or veterans in need. For example, the Pell Grant is offered to military service members in financial need.

As a veteran you are also eligible for specific grants within your school of choice. Ask your college or university's financial aid office for a list of grants and scholarships available for military veterans.

2 . TOP LEVEL TUITION ASSISTANCE: THE POST-9/11 GI-BILL

The Post-9/11 GI Bill is a federal education and housing grant for veterans who have served since Sept. 11, 2001, or three months after.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides financial assistance for an undergraduate and graduate degree, vocational training, tutoring, licensing fees, and housing. Post-9/11 GI Bill funding is designed to cover tuition at in-state colleges or universities; but veterans attending more expensive private schools may apply to have the difference covered as well.

3. REGIONAL TUITION ASSISTANCE: ILLINOIS VETERAN GRANT PROGRAM

The Illinois Veteran Grant Program is available to veterans attending Illinois community or public colleges. Eligible military veterans have served on active duty in the U.S armed forces or Illinois National Guard at least one year, or served during wartime.

If accepted, Illinois veterans may get all four years of undergraduate full-time enrollment tuition and fees covered by the Illinois Veteran Grant. In order to maintain the grant, military students must keep the minimum grade point average determined by your college.

4. REGIONAL TUITION ASSISTANCE: NEW YORK VETERANS TUTION AWARDS

The New York State Higher Education Services offers the Veterans Tuition Awards to NY State veterans, attending school full or part time in NY State.

Eligible veterans may receive full tuition coverage for the State University of New York, and part time students are funded based on credit hours. Student veterans attending vocational school between 3-12 credits per semester may also be reimbursed under the Veterans Tuition Award.

6. SCHOLARSHIP RESOURCE: AMVETS FOR MILITARY FAMILIES

The AMVETS, partnering with DeVry and Phoenix Universities, awards scholarships annually to both veterans and active military service members and their families. Scholarships are based on academic achievement and financial need.

7. SCHOLARSHIP RESOURCE: MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA

The Military Officers Association of America provides specific scholarships and grants to veterans, military children, and children of parents who died serving on active duty. Visit www.moaa.org for more information.
