Dakota Meyer Nominated for Medal of Honor

In 2011, Dakota Meyer, a former Marine corporal, has been approved to receive the Medal of Honor, making Meyer the first living Marine in 41 years to receive the military's highest award for valor.

MEYER LEADS RESCUE MISSION IN AFGHANISTAN

The award honors Meyer's heroic service in Ganjgal, Afghanistan, during September 2009, where he entered a violent kill zone to find three missing members of his embedded training team.

Meyer, then 21, braved the battle zone on foot, undeterred by helicopter pilots who declared the fighting ground too dangerous to enter. When he discovered his team members it was too late to save them, so he carried their bodies from the kill zone.

DAKOTA MEYER'S HEROISM SURFACES DURING WARTIME CHAOS

As with many true heroes, Meyer does credit himself for the courageous act. Meyer saw this rescue as fulfilling his duty, and dedicates any honor he receives entirely to the fallen soldiers, regretting that he wasn't able to bring his teammates home alive.

The Marines serving on the fatal Ganjgal mission were with Embedded Training Team 2-8, where thirteen military service members were attacked by a force of insurgents armed with assault rifles, machine guns, and rocket-propelled grenades.

A mission investigative report included first-person statements from over 35 military service members. The operating base, Forward Operating Base Joyce, was overseen by Task Force Chosin, an Army unit of soldiers from 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, and 10th Mountain Division.

In February 2010, Army officials declared that negligent leadership during the Ganjgal mission, refusing artillery support and failing to notify commands about the trouble, led to many deaths on the battlefield that day.
