After Military Service, Veterans Slow to Receive Benefits

Posted:

Veterans often express frustration with the slow process of getting benefits approved, especially for veterans' disability.

Under a bill that has passed the U.S. House, Representative Mel Watts suggested that the Secretary of Veterans Affairs annually assess the skills of employees and managers who process VA compensation and pension benefit claims.

Those found "deficient" would be offered training and remediation. Disciplinary action would then be taken for employees who don't earn a satisfactory rating.

EQUAL RETIREMENT BENEFITS FOR MILITARY RESERVE?

HOW DOES HEALTH CARE REFORM IMPACT VETERANS?

National healthcare reform should not affect veterans healthcare programs.

Watt said while there would be fiscal consequences to bringing 96 percent of Americans under health insurance, overall he believes the benefits will be more positive than negative and veterans will remain unaffected.

VETERANS HOUSING

Are you a veteran in need of housing assistance who doesn't qualify because you earn a small amount of money?

Homeless veterans are an especially difficult problem. Watts agreed that American veterans should never be homeless, and the Federal government should do everything possible to assure that all veterans have a secure place to live.

Updates on changes to legislation for veterans housing are in the process to guarantee that no veteran who served in the military to protect the American homeland, should ever be without a decent place to call home.
