Tuition Budget Cuts Won't Deter Distance Learning for Veterans

The VA has a longstanding commitment to serving our nation's men and women in uniform through the GI Bill tuition assistance program.

In the coming years, the Department of Defense (DoD) may need to reduce the amount of tuition assistance it provides to military personnel, cuts that could have a severe impact on the finances and budgets of military families across the nation.

Military and defense budget cuts are partially responsible for discussions at the federal level to reduce the Tuition Assistance cap of $250 per credit. The $250 uniform rate was implemented in 2002 across all branches of the military.

Distance learning institutions like Excelsior College of Albany NY have pledged their support to military students: if federal budget constraints force a decrease in military Tuition Assistance programs, Excelsior is one institution that has agreed to lower their tuition rates for military students.

For the military, online education offers more efficient and affordable access to degree programs through online courses and college-level proficiency examinations, and by accepting transfer credits from other colleges and universities as well as recognized corporate and military training programs.

A large percentage of distance learning students are on active duty or in the Reserves and National Guard.

In the 2010-2011 academic year, more than 1,700 graduates - 31 percent the graduating class at Excelsior - were members of the U.S. military. During its 40 years, more than 60,000 service members have earned their degrees from the college, many of whom pursued their education while deployed in war zones. Excelsior has education partnership agreements with all branches of the U.S. military, and the College is repeatedly designated as a top military-friendly college.

Across the military branches, some 350,000 service members used Tuition Assistance funds to take 1.1 million courses in 2010, at a cost of $641 million.

If you're current on active duty or are a veteran, look into the GI Bill benefits that will help you get the higher education that will lead to your next step. An education can both further your career in the military, and help you transition to a higher-paying civilian career once your military service has ended.
