Thrift Savings Plan Benefits In Question

Proposals to overhaul the military retirement system have caused financial stress among military families participating in the federal government's Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).

G FUND AND TSP: CAN THEY FUND MILITARY RETIREMENT?

According to the First Command survey, almost half of military Thrift Savings Plan participants are enrolled in the G Fund, which is invested in U.S. Treasury securities and is considered a low-risk investment.

While reallocating TSP funds to secure options like the G Fund may protect military investors against losses, it may also impact future financial growth.

It is recommended that military service members consult a financial planner to determine the best balance between risk and long-term financial growth for military investments.

MILITARY RETIREMENT SECURITY?

In a sign that enlistment is no longer considered as security for retirement benefits, only slightly more than a third of middle-class members of the military say they're very confident in their ability to retire.

Only thirty-four percent of senior non-commissioned officers and commissioned officers making at least $50,000 per year said that they are extremely or very confident in their ability to retire, and only slightly more survey respondents -- just 37 percent -- said they're extremely or very confident that their military finances will get better in the next year.

An index survey from November 2011 shows that that two thirds of middle-class military families feel nervous about the future of their planned military retirement allocation.
