National Guard Financial Awareness Programs

Posted:

The National Guard Financial Management Awareness Program (FMAP) was first established in September 2009 by the Chief National Guard Bureau, mandating consumer education for service members and their families.

Today, FMAP provides access to services and tools that help National Guard families obtain and maintain positive financial health.

Financial Readiness Programs and Consumer Advocacy Services are available within every state.

WHAT IS FMAP FINANCIAL SUPPORT?

The Financial Management Awareness Program offers financial counseling by personal financial counselors helping Soldiers and families with their personal financial readiness.

A weekly newsletter reaches out and highlights aspects of financial health.

The National Guard Bureau (NGB) financial education program was established through Joint Services Support for Army National Guard members and their families.

For first term soldiers, FMAP includes life-cycle financial education, personal financial training and advanced individual financial training, mandatory personal financial readiness training and more.

Promotion points are given for attending personal financial readiness classes and online financial training.

CONTINUING FINANCIAL EDUCATION

The NGB plans to enhance and popularize Personal Financial Management Training, with its practical approach to financial management for control of finances and money management.

FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND THE ARMY

In accordance with DODI 1342.47, service members are responsible for their personal finances and are expected to handle financial obligations in a timely manner.

DOD has mandated that service members and their families have access to personal financial management programs, services and counseling, and that the priority of financial training efforts be toward junior enlisted members and their families.

Financial training provides service members and their families with the tools needed to manage money wisely and to make informed purchasing decisions.
