How a Financial Planner Combats Military Stress

Posted:

A survey of military professionals and their families - First Command Financial Behaviors Index - noted that a majority of senior NCOs and commissioned officers in pay grades E-6 and above with household incomes of at least $50,000 showed an increase in mental or physical health problems due to financial stress.

Does this sound like you?

Here's good news: just by working with a financial planner, you are less likely to experience challenges caused by money worries.

LINKING FISCAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH IN MILITARY FAMILIES

Some differences between servicemembers with and without a planner included:

Difficulty falling sleeping (18 percent versus 28 percent)
General high stress (15 percent versus 26 percent)
Difficulty staying asleep (15 percent versus 26 percent)
Muscle tension (14 percent versus 28 percent)
Weight changes (14 percent versus 27 percent)
Irritability (10 percent versus 21 percent)

Getting help from a financial planner seems to quell feelings of financial vulnerability as military financial planners help their clients feel:

Financially secure (52 percent versus 28 percent without)
Confident in their future retirement (46 percent versus 20 percent)

Economic uncertainty remains a critical issue for many military families. While money worries can have a negative effect on everyone's physical well-being, for those in the military, financial stress can impact mission performance and that affects us all. Servicemembers who put their trust in a financial coach feel the benefits in both their physical and fiscal health.
