Sequestration Impacts Deployment, PCS and Base Services

Sequestration, with a total $85 billion in spending cuts, begins phasing in starting in 2014.

Will my Deployment orders change?

For 2013, Department of Defense (DoD) is protecting funding for operations in Afghanistan and not cutting accounts related to war operations. The passage of a bill to fund the government for the rest of the 2013 fiscal year helped the Services -- especially the Army and Marine Corps -- pay for training.

The bad news is that other areas will be subject to greater cuts. Even 2013 cuts may not ensure timely preparation of replacements for service members currently deployed.

Will my PCS orders change?

What will happen to Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves is unclear. Funds for PCS moves will be available, but transportation offices will be short-staffed because of civilian furloughs. For 2013, most PCS moves happen as scheduled, but cuts in training funds could affect moves tied to training. Each Service decides on the extent of its PCS moves.

Will my base's commissary and exchange be closed?

The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) withdrew its earlier decision to close all commissaries and its headquarters on Wednesdays. In fact, commissary closure day was set to Mondays, which began May 2013.

If a commissary is already closed on Monday, then the sequestration closure day will be Tuesday. You can check your local commissary's schedule by going to www.commissaries.com and clicking on the "Locations" tab.

Military exchanges (AAFES, NEXCom, Marine Corps Exchange) do not receive appropriated funding (other than some support for shipping goods overseas) and will not need to adjust hours because of sequestration.
