TRICARE Supports Students During College Winter Break

For college students of military families, winter break is an exciting time, when they return home to friends and family or embark on adventurous vacations. It's also a good time to check in on their health after a semester of growing and learning. As a military parent, ensuring that your students' TRICARE benefits support them during the holiday season can be simple.

Students using TRICARE Prime must visit their primary care manager for routine check ups before heading home or vacationing for winter break, in order to avoid higher out-of-pocket costs and point-of-service charges.

For emergency care and specialty services, your student's primary care manager should write a referral. Having a referral from primary care manager will take the place of point-of-service charges for the emergency care visit.

The health of your family is your number one priority. If there is a medical emergency, a TRICARE covered college student is encouraged to call 911 or get to the nearest emergency room immediately. The student's primary care manager must be notified within 24 hours of the emergency room visit.

TRICARE Standard is TRICARE's most flexible coverage plan, where students are covered under any TRICARE-authorized provider.

Students using either TRICARE Standard or Prime can use TRICARE's pharmacy benefit in any location with their valid ID containing current Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) information. For information on how to update your DEERS, visit

The TRICARE Management Activity provides health care services and plans for 9.6 million eligible military beneficiaries of all uniformed services, including military retirees and military families.
