Obama Supports Veterans Employment

No veteran should have to fight for a job at home after they fight for our nation overseas. President Obama vowed to "put country before party" to help former members of the military find jobs.

To achieve that goal, President Obama signed The Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011, combining veterans' tax credits from the American Jobs Act with the Hiring Heroes Act and the Veterans' Opportunity to Work Act.

The Obama Administration also created resources to help veterans translate their military skills for the civilian workforce; built new online tools to aid their search for jobs; and partnered with the Chamber of Commerce and the private sector to connect veterans with companies that want to hire them.

"Our veterans did their jobs. It's time for Congress to do theirs." Obama said.

Obama pressed lawmakers to approve tax credits for businesses to hire unemployed veterans or injured veterans who have been out of work.

Obama wants to help veterans match their skills to jobs through "job banks." Veterans would get access, through a "Veteran Gold Card" issued by the Labor Department, to six months of personalized case management, assessment and counseling at career centers.

The White House estimates the Gold Card could help more than 200,000 unemployed veterans who served after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"Just as you fought for us we are going to keep fighting for you," Obama told vererans.
