Military members may be entitled to extra pay, depending on the circumstances. These special pays are subject to income tax, unless earned in a designated combat zone.
Enlisted military members who are on flying status receive a monthly Flight Pay. Some special rules apply for enlisted members in order to be eligible for flight pay. Enlisted members must have 6 years of operational flying duty in the first 10 years of aviation service in order to receive continuous flight pay through 15 years of service; 9 years of operational flying duty in the first 15 years of service in order to receive continuous flight pay through 20 years of service; 14 years of operational flying duty in the first 20 years of service in order to receive continuous flight pay through 25 years of service.
