A Dream Vacation on a Military Salary

Like many other areas of the American economy, the vacation industry is feeling the economic squeeze.but this could be just the time for you in the military to relax, loosen up and take a vacation. But not just any vacation - how about a dream destination with luxury accommodations?

Why? Because prices for enjoying your vacation of a lifetime may have dropped, while your military income has remained stable...so that same military salary may just to take you farther.

Take a look at some of the vacation deals out there. With lower prices on everything from airfare to hotel stays, it's all become more affordable, even on military enlisted pay.

Look to the skies for some interesting and affordable airfares.

You may find that American Airlines and AirTran are offering some domestic round trip airfares for less than $100. Overall, the 2009 average domestic flight was 9% cheaper than in 2008; and international flight fares were down 6.5%.

Low airfare won't fly forever; United, American and Delta are cutting routes in fall 2010 in an effort to boost prices back up, so stay tuned.

How about the cost of staying in style once you arrive?

Well, in addition to the standard military hotel discounts, some hotels are sweetening the deal by offering state rooms, spa credits or even extra nights at no extra charge.

Check out the offerings from these popular hotel chains:

The Diplomat Golf Resort & Spa, Hallandale Beach and The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa, Hollywood, Florida are offering luxurious accommodations plus $100 spa gift certificates for each night or your stay through November 2009, plus complimentary rounds of golf at the Diplomat for each night of your stay.

Marriott Beach Resort & Emerald Casino put together a special package that includes a free night stay, $200 credit toward the resort's food & beverages and a $200 airfare credit

That adds up to hundreds of bonus dollars, saved. And that's just the start. Check out any hotel you're planning to stay with and ask for their special deals.chances are they can offer you something, and they will.

The cruise industry is reducing deposits, suspending fuel supplements, upgrading rooms for free, offering spa and other on-board credits and letting your military kids travel for free. Overall, cruising prices are down about 20%. Add that to your military vacation discounts and you have a good deal getting better all the time.

So, yes, the economy has put a major crimp in the airline, cruise and hotel industries. But even tough times for the vacation industry can come with a silver lining for military service members who deserve a little R&R, right now.
